Promotional Balloons
Promotional balloons and how they affected the advertising industry
Promotional balloons are probably one of the most used technique in advertising. With all this fuss some may wonder if they actually these items are good enough to deliver the ad message.
Unfortunately promotional balloons were never really studied to see their impact on potential customers. Typically they are seen as a cheap complementary method of delivering some extra punch to an advertising campaign. With this marginal role it is no wonder that no one ever bothered to study them.
Promotional balloons are the method of choice for those companies that wish to deliver a note of youth and energy. This makes this field rather unique as the support of the message is actually part of the message itself. This excludes quite a large number of campaigns and can also mean that this sort of advertising can have a negative effect. I mean think about it. Would you like to see the logo of the bank where you keep your money printed on a cheap balloon? Some careful analysis is needed before undergoing such a step.
The unique aspects that promotional balloons inherently have has repercussions on the way that they are used. The logic is the following: if balloons are to be used, they should be used to their full potential meaning bright colors and a considerable lack of good taste. This is the biggest drawback to this technique and I have yet to see a decent campaign using balloons. The best ones that I saw were the ones restricted to use the colors of the logo. Several car companies were engaged at some time of promoting themselves this way and that was pretty much the peak of this industry.
Promotional balloons are not used though for selling goods, sometimes they are used for something else. I’m talking here about political campaigns. Now you don’t have to start thinking of elections just yet. Many organizations such as Greenpeace use this method to raise awareness on several issues. Political campaigns use of course this technique extensively, but without much effect.
Altogether promotional balloons are a rather specialized form of advertising with its own unique rules and traps. Before you engage in using them, you would better learn these. Otherwise as an additional note to an advertising campaign they certainly help in delivering the message… eventually…
